I've dined at TsuruTonTan a couple of times in midtown, but this is my first visit at their union square location. My friends and I arrived right before closing on a Tuesday night. We were seated in the main dining area on the left and started off with a pitcher of beer. Each of us ended up ordering their top customer favorites, like the wagyu beef truffle dashi, wagyu eggplant tantan, Tsurutontan deluxe, and sizzling sukiyaki. We also opted for their kaarage and truffle fries as an appetizer. Since we were probably the last customers to order, we got our food pretty fast. The kaarage was crispy, but the French fries were undercooked, which was disappointing. All the udons with soup came out with extremely large bowls. I was very pleased with my wagyu eggplant tantan. The wagyu was thinly sliced and extremely soft. The soup broth with the minced beef was so flavorful and filling. Most importantly, the texture of the udon noodles were chewy and very pleasant to eat. The eggplant was also a nice addition to the dish but not the star. I struggled to finish my bowl since I was so full but eventually ate everything since it was so good. Overall, Tsurutontan is a solid udon spot. I would definitely go back for their tantan, but I typically go for their curry udons since they are harder to find elsewhere.

Overall: Went here for a friday date night. They had last minute reservations available. The food portions were huge and pretty solid. It won't be my go to place, but it was solid, available, and a good value. Food: 4 Drinks: 4 Service: 3 Value: 5 Atmosphere: 3 Food: The food ranged from decent to pretty good. We ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll, Tuna Avocado Crispy Rice, US Wagyu Beef Sukiyaki, and Katsu Donburi Bowl. For the apps, the crispy rice very nicely cooked and warm while the tuna roll was just average. The Sukiyaki was the best dish of the night - it was enormous and came with a nice portion of beef. I was disappointed with the Katsu Donburi - the pork was soggy and the dish was mostly white rice. The quantities were nice but some dishes could have been higher quality. Drinks: My girlfriend got a cocktail and I got one of the happy hour hot sake's. The sake was a good value and was plenty for the full meal. They had plenty of other options as well. Service: The restaurant seemed understaffed and it took a while for a server to take our order. Food was quick once we got started, but the waiter mostly served to take our order and drop off food, there wasn't much else. But overall nothing to complain about. Value: The prices don't look particularly cheap, but the food portions (particularly any sort of udon dish) are massive. The bowl might as well be a bucket. Its a ton of food. We also got lucky with the late night friday happy hour starting at 9pm. None of the deals were amazing, but they shaved $3-4 off of most dishes. We ordered too much food, but the value here is pretty good. Atmosphere: The interior was nicely decorated and brightly lit. There were some Asian design elements and some cool bar like seating int he middle. We had a small table off to the side. Tables were reasonably spread out and since the restaurant was only half full it felt like we had plenty of space. The atmosphere didn't add anything special, but it was a nice place to grab dinner.

Came on the weekend it was pretty empty, the weekend doesn't offer and lunch deal or happy hour: the price gets quite expensive. The bowl are ally large for all the regular udon options. The toro sashimi has 8 thick pieces. But the fish doenst seem not fresh, part of the fish are grey not even pink. I had the duck udon the broth has more a sweeter taste to it. Recommend to come on the weekday lunch, much affordable with the same amount of food
